Translating Research – What’s The Plan?

An important part of writing grant and scholarship applications in health-related research includes preparing a section on knowledge translation (KT). But what differentiates a well-written, comprehensive KT plan from a poor one? This issue was addressed in a paper published last year in Implementation Science. The authors highlighted common KT-related strengths (things that may be easier to do or are more traditional) and limitations (things that may be more difficult to do or are less conventional) from a sample of applications submitted to funding agencies in the UK. At a minimum, they provided insight into how this part of the research process can be optimized and how researchers can prepare their applications, and their KT sections in particular, to stand out from the crowd.
