Yah, Yah, It’s Research Day!

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to receive money to support our research from a variety of sources.

Most of our larger studies have been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the primary national agency that funds health-related research in Canada. While we’ve received support from other organizations (e.g., Public Health Agency of Canada, Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions, Canadian Obesity Network), many of our students, and a couple smaller-scale studies, have been funded by our local Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI).

WCHRI is a wonderful resource for researchers at UAlberta. As one personal example, a few years ago, we were successful in receiving an emerging research team grant related to pediatric weight management. We learned a lot through this research, both academically and administratively, about communication, teamwork, and collaboration, all of which played a substantial role in our success last year when we received a national team grant in bariatric care from CIHR – Team ABC3. I don’t believe we’d have been successful nationally at CIHR if we hadn’t received local support from WCHRI for our initial team grant.

Today is the 8th Annual WCHRI Research Day. As you can see from the photo, three of our favourite students (Arnaldo Perez, Nadia Browne, and Samah Damanhoury) are enjoying the festivities and all-things-WCHRI downtown at the Westin Hotel. Congrats to Dr. Sandy Davidge (WCHRI Director) and her team on another successful event!
