With over 5,000 attendees at Obesity Week in LA, some of the sessions are full; others are VERY full.
One jam-packed session this morning about diet and weight maintenance was overflowingly popular, with topics covering everything from basic biology and animal studies to approaches to synthesizing clinically-based evidence and outcome studies.
Some general, key messages:
- Might need to apply different behavioural approaches for weight loss (more diet focused) vs weight loss maintenance (more activity focused)
- Adhering to a diet in lower total energy is more important that the specific macronutrient blend of protein, fat and carbohydrate
- Predictors of weight loss maintenance: Regular activity + frequent self-weighing
- Predictors of weight regain: Depressive symptoms + lack of restraint
For the most part, these findings come from adult studies, but much of this is likely relevant to our work with families, too.
