Another popular session at the conference this week included a debate between two leading researchers in metabolically healthy obesity.
Drs. Sam Klein and Mark Hamer engaged in an evidence-based (and often humorous) exchange regarding whether individuals with MHO should be encouraged to lose weight. Drawing on data from their own clinical (Klein) and epidemiological (Hamer) research, they did an excellent job of discussing issues concerning MHO definitions, prevalence, stability over time, and the impact of diet and physical activity on changes in MHO status.
As our research in pediatric MHO continues over the next year or so, led day-to-day by Samah Damanhoury (PhD Candidate), it will be helpful to take guidance from these leaders and their adult-based research to inform our own program.
